Higher education needs competent leadership

Higher education needs competent leadership. Higher education in India is again trying to overcome its problems. Chief among these problems are the economic crisis, the irrelevance of the courses, the confrontation between the student and administration in universities, lack of qualified teachers and students. Many universities still teach decades-old courses. The crisis of highly qualified and competent educational leadership is also happening. In such a situation, challenges have arisen to bring innovation in higher education and make it at par with world-class educational institutions. Sadly, instead of worrying about making higher education world class, we are putting all our energies in giving more emphasis on sporadic reforms. The truth is that today our house of education is broken. It is expected that the new education policy would have thought to shape and give a new shape.

There is a great need for Indian higher education today – the development of qualified and academically sound academic leadership. At present, youth are agitated in all universities. Tension, violence and confrontation have become common among student-administration. Apart from this, the challenges of bringing innovation in the courses, development of qualified faculty and student community are also facing the face of university education. If universities get good and qualified chancellors, then it can solve half of their problems. Indian higher education needs an educational leadership that possesses the qualities of high communication paradigm and solid administrative decision making as well as eliminating the growing communication gap. Governors can have a big role in giving such educational leadership to higher education. Wherever there are governors with sensitive academic sense and their academic advisory boards, better chancellors have been created and universities where skilled vice-chancellors have been helped create a better environment. Today, it is needed that universities of the Hindu belt regain their lost glory. The good thing is that many experienced politicians in the Hindu belt hold the post of Governor. He has long experience. In such a situation, the first hope awakens us from such governors.

Continuous change in curriculum over time can help us a lot in bringing innovation in higher education. In many universities here we have not changed the courses in the last 40-50 years. Whereas we should keep changing the syllabus on the basis of local folk society, its language, culture, its industries, local technical and other needs. In these changes, we must include both localism and globalism. Today, the evolving industry in India is looking for trained youth based on their needs and our higher education is growing in the old rhythm regardless of it. Today, higher education needs to be reshaped according to local, global, social and industrial needs. In major universities of the world, almost every year teachers make innovative changes in their courses. The bureaucratic grip on the entire process of changing the curriculum here is so strong that it takes a significant part of our energy and time. We have to make the process of changing the curriculum in our universities simple and easy.

Apart from this, one hope is to provide better infrastructure to its students and teachers by exploring government private partnership as well as the possibility of public private partnership. Today our industry is looking for trained youth for themselves. In such a situation, it would be better to keep some of their representatives in the advisory committee of our universities. As an example, the Uttar Pradesh government has formed the Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Council to give direction to higher education, in which a member will be from the industry. Such efforts will be helpful in connecting higher education to social needs.

What is the experiment?

Our university campuses are becoming centers of youth outrage. If we innovate in higher education, it will help to calm the youth at psychological level. Having the necessary infrastructure in institutions of higher education will also help to eliminate the feeling of neglect among the youth at the psychological level. When our students feel that this education has relevance and will be important in the job market, then they will keep connected with their education. Our academic leadership’s positive interaction with its student community in university and college campuses will also help the education campuses overcome tension, clashes and violence.

Everyone has to be aware of the growing crisis in higher education. The betterment of government education institutions is like dying for the poor, middle class, dalits and the marginalized. Due to the weakening of government education institutions, the number of private sector universities in the country is increasing. Their infrastructure and large packages of salaries are attracting well-known teachers and researchers from government universities. In such a situation, we must remove the growing weakness within the education system at the earliest.
